How is South Dakota unique?

South Dakota is a healthy state compared to the other states in the Midwest and is a leader in a few categories. The diabetes rate in South Dakota is the best in the Midwest. Only six point nine (6.9%) of the adult population suffers from diabetes. This is significantly better than the regional average of eight point three two percent (8.32%).

Next, South Dakota has second lowest rate of smoking adults when compared to the other regions in the Midwestern United States. Fifteen point four percent (15.4%) of the adult population in South Dakota are smokers. Only eleven and a half percent (11.5%) of the residents of South Dakota report that they are in poor to fair health. This is much better than the regional average of thirteen point seven percent (13.7%).

Endorsements

South Dakota is a compact state. If you are moving to South Dakota or claiming it as your primary state of residence, you will need to apply for application by endorsement in order to use your license in South Dakota. General instructions are listed below.

  • Completed online application and fee of $100, You can also apply for a temporary permit for an additional $25 fee.

  • Official transcripts must be sent to the Board of Nursing

  • Criminal background check

  • Verification of employment verifying either

  • 140 hours practiced as an RN in the last 12 months, or

  • 480 hours in the last six years

  • You must have your current or previous employer fill out the Employment Verification Form and return it to the South Dakota Board of Nursing.

  • Verification of original licensure

  • You may verify your licensure using Nursys website if your original state of licensure participates in the site

  • If your state does not participate in the Nursys Verification system you can download the Verification of Licensure Form. Check with your state for applicable fees.

You may renew your license online for a fee of $90. You must verify that you have worked either 140 hours in the last 12 months or 480 hours in the last six years as a registered nurse.

South Dakota does not have a continuing education requirement for renewal. If you cannot demonstrate the minimum work requirement, then you will have to take an 80 hour refresher course.

In-person training

Blended class Classroom
Format This is a personalized and adaptive class completed online with a computer. After the class you will schedule with an instructor to complete the hands-on portion of the class. This is a traditional classroom class with an instructor.
Course completion Complete the online portion + hands-on skills session with an AHA Instructor. Contact a Training Center in your area to sign up for an instructor-led class, see above
Time The online portion of HeartCode BLS can be completed in approximately 1 to 2 hours. Time to complete the hands-on skills session varies around approximately 60 minutes, depending on your experience level. A full BLS provider course can take 4.5 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing.
