The Alabama Board of Nursing's (ABN) mission is to provide patients with competent medical staff through regulation and licensing requirements. Alabama is now a compact state under the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), effective since January 1, 2024. If you do not hold a multi-state license, you will require licensure by endorsement. On this page, you will find general information regarding the ABN's endorsement, renewal, and continuing competency requirements.
Application for license endorsement is required for nurses who received their license in another state. The requirements for endorsement are listed below.
24 contact hours are required for endorsement and renewal. There are several methods for obtaining required contact hours. According to the Alabama Board of Nursing, "We typically accept CE courses that are approved or accredited by any state board of nursing, state nurses association, or national organization such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)." You can also find accredited courses online, such as those offered by ACLS.net.

Oct 28, 2024 --During the Alabama-Missouri game, nurse Erin Mender heroically responded to two medical emergencies within minutes. First, she aided a fan with a head injury, helping an EMT transport the individual to an ambulance. As she returned to her seat, she was urgently called again—this time to assist the very same EMT, who had collapsed. Realizing he had no pulse, Mender immediately began CPR. Her quick actions were captured on video and praised by medical professionals. The EMT later recovered and expressed his gratitude. Mender hopes to reconnect with him, saying she simply did what any trained person should do.
May 30, 2024 --During a routine workout at his local YMCA in spring 2024, Floyd Lawson—a healthy, active veteran—collapsed after doing crunches. He lost consciousness, later recalling only the moment before blacking out. Fortunately, Dr. Andrew Edwards, an emergency physician from UAB, happened to be at the gym with his son. Seeing the commotion, Edwards quickly assisted a nurse and medical student already performing CPR. After multiple rounds of CPR and AED shocks, Lawson regained consciousness. Edwards immediately coordinated his transfer to UAB Hospital, crediting quick bystander response and timely intervention for saving Lawson’s life
Nov 2, 2023 --A woman experienced a medical emergency while she was driving. Five individuals sprang into action, including Andrew Gamble from Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue, who initiated CPR on the driver. Another training officer Adam Whatley and his team used a defibrillator to aid the driver. The driver is in intensive care but their coordinated efforts offer hope for a positive outcome. Alabama Fire College lauded the heroic efforts of these firefighters.
Aug 3, 2023 --First-term Representative Dale Strong (R-Alabama) along with medical professionals helped a jogger experiencing a heart attack. According to NBC's Huntsville affiliate WAFF report, Dales Strong and rescue volunteers responded to a call from Virginia Police informing them about Kyle Brown's medical emergency. He was with his friends and his wife when he went into cardiac arrest. String and rescue volunteers utilized Lucas CPR machine on Brown. On saving Brown they were lauded for their selfless dedication.
Jun 12, 2023 --Mother of three, Junella Foster, recalls an ordinary night turned life-threatening when she fell unwell. In a hazy recount, Foster shared, "I started feeling strange..." Her 16-year-old daughter, J'Kaila Foster, described finding her mother in distress, leading to Junella collapsing in cardiac arrest. J'Kaila's quick thinking and knowledge of CPR from watching Grey's Anatomy proved pivotal, saving her mother's life. Despite initial doubts from medical workers about Junella's recovery, she emerged from a coma with cognitive faculties intact. The Fosters hope their experience encourages CPR education, given that most cardiac arrests occur at home.
Apr 7, 2023 --Heather Baker, a 28-year-old school administrator in Pecatonica, Illinois, experienced a sudden cardiac arrest during a meeting. Despite being an athlete and having no known preexisting conditions, she collapsed, and her heart stopped. Colleagues acted swiftly: Bill Faller performed CPR, a pregnant school psychologist fetched an automated external defibrillator (AED), and Tim King, a volunteer firefighter, used the AED to restore her heart's rhythm. Baker's survival defied the odds, as only about 10% survive cardiac arrest outside a hospital. Grateful for her second chance, she now trains thousands in CPR and advocates for heart health awareness.
Jan 10, 2023 --In Dothan, Alabama, a woman from Ozark is being hailed a hero after performing CPR on her father during a sudden cardiac arrest on the way to his doctor's appointment. John Matthews' daughter, Laura Smith, a respiratory therapist with 26 years of experience, quickly recognized the signs and administered life-saving CPR for over seven minutes. Matthews was stabilized at Dale Medical Center, where staff identified low blood pressure and kidney-related fluid retention as contributing factors. Smith highlighted the significance of knowing CPR for all ages, as uncertainty surrounds Matthews' recovery timeline at Flowers Hospital.
Aug 9, 2022 --Odenkirk collapsed on the set during the shooting of the scenes of the movie. He felt discomfort and fell on his knees and then all the way down and was not breathing. He had a cardiac arrest, luckily the paramedic staff was there on the set. They instantly performed CPR on him. They provided him with three shocks with a defibrillator. He was then transported to the hospital where he went through surgery.
Jul 6, 2022 --Bridon and Christian, Brad Hassig's 10-year-old twins were swimming along with his friend. Brad decided to do an underwater calming exercise and breathing when he passed out. Christian along with Brad's friend pulled him out and Bridon started performing CPR. He had no training, he just saw it on TV. His life was saved.
Jul 6, 2022 --Brad Hassig was doing his routine breathing exercises in the pool when he passed out and started turning blue. The twin brothers saw something wrong with their dad so they rushed and took him out of the water. They didn't have any phone so Christian rushed and asked someone to call 911. Meanwhile, Bridon performed CPR which he learned from the scene in a movie. Luckily, it worked and Hassig was spitting water as the first aid responders arrived.
Mar 2, 2021 --It is an accident in a remote resort located 56.5 miles in the northeast of Fairbanks. A middle-aged man died despite the provision of CPR. Emergency responders collected a 911 call at 7:19 revealing CPR in progress at Chena Resort. Steese Volunteer Fire Department EMTs reached almost an hour later and found the resort crew was carrying out CPR on Kyle Patsy. "Our crew took over, didn’t find any pulse or respiration, so we continued on with CPR and breathing for him, We continued care until we contacted a hospital physician who recommended discontinuing life-saving efforts” according to Deputy Chief David Daniell. Patsy was declared dead at the scene at 8:27."
Jan 21, 2021 --After receiving a report of a snowmachine accident near Fox, on the pipeline access trails, Alaska State Troopers responded to the scene. An early investigation discovered that 41-year-old Misty Blanchard of Fairbanks was handling a snowmachine with a single passenger recognized as 23-year-old Sidney Robertson of Jackson, Missouri, lost control while descending down a steep hill resulting in a crash. CPR and other life-saving efforts were performed on the scene, however, Blanchard was pronounced dead. Robertson was shifted to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and then on to Providence Alaska Medical Center.
Nov 4, 2020 --65-year-old Ronald Cameron lost his on Monday after trying to tie up his boat in windy conditions. Sitka police stated that they received a report of a man floating in the water. Emergency workers pulled Cameron out of the water and began CPR but he didn't respond. He was declared deceased at the scene. No foul play was found in the death as stated by the Sitka Police Department.
Sep 21, 2020 --"Firefighters responded at 2:57 p.m. (9-21-20) after receiving calls about a house fire at 147 Price street. The crew reached the site at 3:05 and started extinguishing the fire. Firefighters came to know about one occupant inside after the fire was mostly contained. “We found one person in the trailer in one of the bedrooms,” Fire Chief Dave Miller said. “We got that patient out and started CPR on her right away, and transported her to Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center fairly quickly.” The woman was identified as 58-year-old Betty Jo Edenshaw, who expired early Saturday morning."
Aug 27, 2020 --Juneau police reported that 33-year-old Johnathan Danial Hacko was found dead inside a forklift on a construction site in the Mendenhall Valley on Wednesday. Hacko was found unconscious by one of his colleagues, Capital City Fire and Rescue reached on-site and gave Hacko CPR in an attempt to revive him, but ultimately he was declared deceased.
Aug 9, 2020 --Alaska state troopers reported an accident that claimed the life of a worker on Saturday afternoon at a work site. The wounded worker, identified as Ivan Baukin was evacuated by the people at the scene and moved to Delta Family Medical. AST took over the CPR until EMS from Fort Greely reached to manage advanced lifesaving actions. However, 36 years old didn't respond and pronounced dead at 3:58 pm.
Jun 21, 2020 --Lucas Hutchins, a six-year-old boy was saved by his brother who saw him in the pool and informed his parents. He was taken out of the pool and his father Joseph Hutchins gave him CPR until the paramedics arrived. He was taken to the hospital where he is recovering now.
Aug 7, 2019 --Adaveion Jackson, a high school football player, collapsed on the second day of fall practice. Others thought he was suffering from a cardiac arrest so the coaches performed CPR on him and used AED. He was then taken to the hospital. The superintendent Ben Baker said that the coaches saved the boy's life.
Jul 2, 2019 --Cam Whigwam was enjoying the start of his 4th of July holiday with friends at the Pink Pony Pub when he saw a man falling down the stairs in front of them. He noticed the man was unresponsive so he immediately called 911. While waiting for 911 to arrive, he immediately performed CPR, the very basic skills that he learned in high school, he said. After a few compressions, the 45-year-old victim started talking. Shortly thereafter, first responders arrived and saw the man alive and conscious. He was later brought to the hospital.
Jun 3, 2019 --44-year-old Casey Meyers car fell into a ditch, hit an embankment, and rolled over several times and he was ejected from the car. CPR efforts were not successful. Alcohol appears to be a factor.
Mar 5, 2019 --When three men who were working saw their colleague slumped at his office floor, they wasted no time and immediately called 911. While waiting for first responders to arrive, they took the AED from the office's breakroom, connected it to the victim then followed the instructions given by the machine which was to administer shock and to begin CPR. They did just until the Mobile Fire Rescue paramedics arrived. They later brought the man to the hospital where he was declared out of danger.
Feb 11, 2019 --Joe Henson started the marathon in perfect shape. He was feeling great, his pace was just right and the weather was what he called "decent". However, a few miles before approaching the finish line, he felt his heart and chest flutter and he started to experience tunnel vision, then he suddenly collapsed. Henson was having a heart attack and became unconscious. All of a sudden, a guy who came from nowhere appeared saying he's a cardiologist checked Joe Henson's pulse and found it very weak. The doctor started to perform CPR and together with the lifesaving skills of the Birmingham Firefighers and Andrews Sports Medicine, Joe Henson regained consciousness. He was later brought to the hospital where he was declared out of danger.
Sep 24, 2018 --A 5-month old baby boy died in the baththub where he was left by his father. It was not clear why he was left in the bathtub but the baby was already unconscious when responders arrived in the scene. Paramedics performed CPR but the baby died in the hospital later.
Jul 25, 2018 --Alonzo Muntez Sykes was found dead in his dormitory at the Ventress Facility located in Clayton, Alabama. He had multiple stab wounds when found by staff of the Alabama Department of Corrections who immediately performed CPR on the victim. But it was too little too late to save this 29-year-old inmate as he expired just 15 minutes after he was found by prison staff.
Jul 19, 2018 --A deep friendship was made on Lee county's police department. It was on a fateful day that Iris Bridges suffered a heart attack, that is when first responder came to the scene. Sheriff Jay Jones arrived first and started doing chest compressions and rescue breathings to Iris while waiting for paramedics to arrive.It so happens that both Jay and Iris worked together for almost 40 years on the same department and it was thanks to that experience that Jay was able to come to help quickly.
Jul 11, 2018 --Brandon Hoguet, a beach enforcement officer, responded to a call for help at Gulf Shores. He pulled a drowning woman from the waters. His father, Michael Hoguet and Nathaniel Harris, both police officers, also responded to the call and began CPR immediately. The woman survived and all three men were honored with awards.
Mar 8, 2018 --Police officer Joseph Gliner responded to a call about an unconcious man at a health club, he arrived and inmediatly started cpr maneuvers on the almost dying man, he requested the AED and gave a shock to the body. Several bystanders were able to help him as well and after a several minutes the ambulance arrived to provide assistance.
Dec 17, 2017 --EMS units responded to a report of a woman suffering an asthma attack. Sheriff's department workers had recognized the address from a domestic dispute earlier in the day. EMS workers decided to go into the woman's home rather than wait for law enforcement. Christopher Wade Smith, the woman's husband, was attempting CPR and when the fire chief offered assistance Smith punched him, causing fractures around his right eye. The woman did not survive. Smith was charged with both assault first degree and criminal mischief second degree.
Apr 21, 2017 --Jodi Herte was at home enjoying a nice meal with her husband Keith when suddenly, she stopped feeling her arms and legs, falling to the ground unresponsive. Keith inmediatly called 9-1-1 and the dispatcher helped him by playing the sound of a metronome so he can concentrate and pace himself while doing the chest compressions "I thought, 'I hope I don't screw this up, I thought, 'Maybe this is her time. Maybe I shouldn't be doing it.' It's kind of a battle you play in your head" said Mr. Herte. Paramedics arrived on the scene and provided much needed assistance. Jodi successfuly recovered and thanked her husband for such an heroic action.
Mar 21, 2017 --Officer Bryan Pearman was doing his routine patrol when he spotted a homeless man collapsing anf suffering a cardic arrest. The police officer inmediatly steps in and begins doing chest compressions and rescue breathing for several minutes until the ambulance arrived to help “It made me feel great that I was able to do what I took an oath to do was to protect and serve and I served my city by saving that man’s life,” said the heroic officer.
Jan 4, 2017 --Alli Cochran and her Mia Carter saved the life of a man who suddenly collapsed at a Chelsea community center. Apparently the man suffered a cardiac arrest and that is when Alli jumped to the action by giving CPR to the man while her mother ran outside to call for help. An AED was brought by Mia Carter and after taking all metal objects away from the man, they proceeded to give a discharge in order to jump start his heart once again. The EMT arrived several minutes later in order to give assistance.
Oct 14, 2016 --Tasha Eisom was the hero of the day. It all happened when she was driving to work and noticed a man collapsed next to his car. His name was Mike Parent and he was next to his broken down vehicle. Tasha didn’t know what to do, so she called 911 and asked for help. Thankfully he was assisted by a professional who told her the exact steps in order to perform CPR on the almost dying man. She did so for several minutes until paramedics arrived and were able to give Mr. Parent the right attention. He is now recovered and reunited with Tasha and the dispatcher in order to thank them.
Jul 15, 2016 --An inmate was found lying unconscious by Christopher Kester, an officer at Steuben County correctional facility. Without knowing the cause of said state, Kester along with Sargeant Vicent Fanzo assisted by administering CPR maneuvers on the almost dead inmate until he regained a pulse and started breathing, on time for the ambulance to come to the scene, thanks to the ample CPR experience of officer Kester who is a volunteer for the ambulance corps the inmate lived to see another day.
Apr 28, 2016 --Joseph Edwards, who is a Fire chief at the East Brandywine Fire Department went to the gym on January 15 for a workout. Only minutes into his workout, a man on a treadmill in front of him went into cardiac arrest. Edwards jumped into action, calling for the staff to bring him an AED and to call 911. He was able to give the man a few shocks and perform CPR until the 911 staff arrived. The man was taken to the hospital where he is recovering.
