The province faces significant challenges in managing cardiac health:
Sep 7, 2023 --Iqaluit acquired its first LUCAS (Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System) device, a $21,000 machine that automates chest compressions during CPR. By September, emergency responders had used it six times, including a life-saving intervention in May for a heart attack victim who later stabilized in Ottawa. Fire Chief Steve McGean praised the device for allowing responders to focus on patient transport and other critical tasks, and plans to acquire two more units to equip all ambulances and a fire truck.
Sep 7, 2023 --Two RCMP officers and four firefighters in Iqaluit were awarded lifesaver pins for their prompt application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which successfully saved a resident's life. The awards were presented by Fire Chief Steve McGean at the Iqaluit fire hall.
